| Early Reading First in Saint Paul Public Schools | |
The Early Childhood CHOICE (Children Have Opportunities In Centers of Excellence) program was developed to provide research based training and core knowledge for teaching staff to ensure that children acquire foundational literacy skills.
The program was federally funded by an Early Reading First grant.
Research tells us that increasing the quality and intensity of
literacy services will support future academic achievement.
Lessons
learned from the Early Childhood CHOICE - Early Reading First grant (2003-2007) have been used to initiate
this website for teachers. Over time, sections will be
added and edited based on the Project Early Kindergarten-Early Reading
First grant (2006-2009) experiences.
Included in this site are important considerations and resources for teachers to use as they establish literacy rich preschool classrooms and home-school connections.
"Excellent preschools can also make a difference for at-risk children; excellent in this case implies providing rich opportunities to learn and to practice language and literacy related skills in a playful and motivating setting. Substantial research confirms the value of such preschools in preventing reading difficulties for at-risk children."
